Nigeria F.C. wins the 2022 URBOND Community Football Tournament – June edition!

Football tournament on a lovely Saturday afternoon – what more could we ask!

The 2nd edition of the URBOND Community Football Tournament took place on Saturday, 11th June 2022 at the Priory Community Sports Centre, Portsmouth.

7 teams registered for this tournament but 2 pulled out during the last minute leaving 5 teams to compete in a round robin and elimination format.

The teams included,

  1. City of Sanctuary
  2. Bangaz FC
  3. Nigeria FC
  4. Team URBOND 1
  5. Golden State Richmond
  6. Sudanese Community Team (cancelled)
  7. Team URBOND 2 (cancelled)

At the start of the tournament, Willard-Hans Shongue, URBOND Community Integration Programme Manager said it was another great day for URBOND, as we continue to engage members of our community into fitness and sporting activities. “This is not just a normal football tournament by the looks of it. For us, it is an opportunity to bring members of our community from all background, beliefs, and ideology together to take part in fitness and sports, and to meet and make friends with one another so we can make our community a better place to live in.”

He also thanked the tournament sponsor – Richmond Motor Group for their continuous support to URBOND and its efforts to engage our community members into fitness and sporting activities.

Algarve’s Grill made a £40 discount voucher to the winner of the tournament – Thank you Algarve’s Grill.

2022 URBOND Community Football Tournament – June

Congratulations to Nigeria F.C., Winner of the 2022 URBOND Community Football Tournament Award – June edition!

Team Captain Timi said his team was ‘over the moon’ at Saturday’s win and is looking forward to the next tournament on 23rd July to retain their trophy.

Captain Sihle, of Bangaz F.C. who finished in 2nd Place, said its unfortunate they lost as they had a strong side but “fair play to Nigeria F.C. for winning”. His team will be back in July and will aim to go a step further.

Captain Divine Njinyam of Team URBOND, who finished 3rd Place had this to say after collecting the 3rd Place award, “It wasn’t only about winning a tournament, but was “about bringing people together and having such an experience enables us to make new friends and people in our community. We’re looking forward to the next tournament in July where we can win back our trophy.” Team URBOND won the 2019 edition of the URBOND Community Tournament.

Special guests at the tournament were, The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and the Lady Mayoress, Councillor Canon Dr Hugh Mason and Miss Marie Costa. Both were thrilled with the performance of both teams at the final and The Lord Mayor had this to say, “It’s great to see so many young people engaging in sports and supporting the work of URBOND in making our community a better place.”

50 participants and 39 supporters were at the tournament (making a total of 89 people) and funds raised will go to support our work in our community and the URBOND Child Education Programme in the Republic of Guinea.

Our next Community Football Tournament will be on Saturday, 23rd July 2022 at Priory Community Sports Centre from 12pm.
